The Heart & Mind of Nurse Coaching™ is grounded in the principles of Modeling and Role-Modeling (MRM), the nursing theory developed by Dr. Helen Erickson with Evelyn Tomlin and Mary Ann Swain. MRM begins with a deceptively simple idea: To truly help another person, first seek to understand their world as they experience it. We believe that principle belongs at the center of nurse coaching.
But coaching is not rescuing.
MODELING
First, understand their world.
Modeling requires us to become curious about the person's unique experience.
"What happened?"
"What does what happened mean to you?"
"What do you need to change?"
"How do you see the situation you're in?"
"Here is what I think you should do."
"Help me understand what this is like for you."
You learn to listen without rushing ahead.
Notice without immediately interpreting.
Ask without assuming.
Explore without imposing.
Become willing to discover that the client's truth may look very different from your own.
You meet the person where they are.
ROLE-MODELING
Then, coach from there.
Once you begin to understand the person's world, you can partner with them in a way that honors their strengths, autonomy, values, readiness and goals.
You are not pulling them toward your vision for their life.
You are helping them discover and move toward theirs.
This changes everything about the coaching relationship.
The client is no longer a problem to solve.
The client becomes a whole human being with strengths, resources, experiences, beliefs, possibilities and an inherent capacity for growth.
